I think one of the hardest parts of being a stage actor was to make it through the audition stage, only to find you were not a fit for the show. The show may have already cast you, but they’ve also cast the cast with you. This can be a bit of a scary experience, and it’s even more so if you don’t understand what an audition is like.
As a stage actor, I have been lucky enough to not be cast against type in the process. I have never had to be the butt of a joke, and the experience of having people laugh at me makes it feel more like a performance than just a run-of-the-mill audition. I think that makes it a whole lot easier to be cast with a particular person. I think it also makes it more fun because you know that no one has actually seen you before.
There’s another way to look at the audition process, which is to look at it from the perspective of the audience. We’re putting on a show. We’re not making a movie. We’re doing a show. We’re not making a documentary. We’re putting on a show for those who don’t have the time or the resources to watch a movie.
The audience doesn’t have to be the same as the person auditioning. The audience can be someone who watches the show, someone who is not in a position to make the film, or someone that someone in the audience might be.
